Volkswagen Alltrack Concept to Appear at New York Auto Show

Volkswagen announced Tuesday that the Alltrack concept will be unveiled at the New York International Auto Show this week.

The Alltrack concept is a potential future model that is half way between passenger car and SUV, combining both versatility and offroad ability.

“Those who want versatility and offroad ability without the footprint of an SUV, the choices facing buyers are limited in the U.S. That’s why Volkswagen is showing the Alltrack Concept at the New York International Auto Show," Volkswagen explained in the announcement.

The Alltrack is designed to make it comfortable offroad as it is in the city. It features 4Motion® all-wheel-drive with an offroad driving program. The program makes key vehicles dynamic and assistance systems for offroad driving with maximum 18 mph speed.

As for the exterior, the chunky bumpers and flared side skirts with a raised ride height of the car narrows the gap between passenger car and SUV.

The engine of the Alltrack features its frugal 2.0-liter turbocharged TDI Clean Diesel engine that produces 140 horse power and 236 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-spped DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission.

For offpath environment, a solid steel-plate-underbody guard protects the engine, gearbox, oil pan, exhaust system, and various hoses from damage.

The company does not yet have a plan to bring Alltrack to the U.S. market. Volkswagen stated that the concept is set to “gauge market reaction to a potential future model that is similarly sized and combines offroad ability with wagon versatility.”

The 2012 New York International Auto Show, which will be held April 6-15 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, is one of the most important automotive events in the world. The show offers virtually every make and model vehicle sold in the U.S. under one roof giving consumers the unique opportunity to see everything the auto industry has to offer.

The official opening day for the show is Saturday, April 7. Festivities are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with the show floor opening at 10 a.m.
