Ford has introduced a new feature in the U.K. designed specifically to help drivers cut back on speeding tickets called the "Intelligent Speed Limiter."

The built in device detects road signs and cameras and slows down where necessary, according to a Ford blog post.

"Speed limiting technology was last year specified on around two-thirds of Ford vehicles for which it was available, proving popular with drivers who want to ensure they avoid incurring speeding fines by unintentionally exceeding the speed limit. Intelligent Speed Limiter makes that even easier," said Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe, in a company release.

So how does the device decide when and where to slow down exactly? A windscreen-mounted camera monitors road signs and when the speed limit is lower than the maximum speed set by a driver on the steering wheel.

Developed by Ford of Europe, the system works by combining Ford's Traffic Sign Recognition and its Adjustable Speed Limiter, both of which are already available for vehicles like the Focus, Monedo and Kuga SUV, according to Ford.

"We see Ford's Intelligent Speed Limited being one of many features that continue to bring semi-autonomous features to Ford vehicles," said Ford spokesman Chris Terry to AutoWorldNews. "Other examples include active park assist that delivers both parallel and perpendicular parking as well as features such as active city stop."

"We do see these kinds of technologies filtering across other vehicle lines in time as the cost of these technologies become more cost effective," Terry added.

Intelligent Speed Limiter also detects when objects or people are on the road ahead and applies the brakes if a driver doesn't respond to its warnings.

The Intelligent Speed Limiter is being launched in Ford's S-Max in Europe. Terry said it is too early to tell what other rides will be equipped with the feature or if it will reach the U.S.

"We can confirm that Intelligent Speed Limiter will be rolled out to other vehicle lines in Europe but it is too early to discuss full details at this time," said Terry.
