Honda Motors is adding more than 100,000 vehicles to a recall related to possible defective air bags manufactured by Takata Corp. that can deploy with too much force and spray occupants with metal shards.

The expansion means a total of 5.5 million Honda and Acura vehicles are now covered from 2001 to 2011 model years over air bag issues, the automaker said in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The air bag recall has affected nearly 25 million vehicles at several automakers around the world since 2008. Faulty parts have been linked to six deaths so far and dozens of injuries.

The Japanese automaker said that the expansion of a December 2014 affects approximately 104,871 Honda vehicles in the United States.

Vehicles listed in the recall expansion includes 88,549 Pilot SUVs from the 2008 model year, 10,868 2004 Civic cars and 5,454 2001 Accord sedans. Though some 2001 Accord and 2004 Civic cars were called back under the previous recall, no 2008 Pilots had been called back up until now.

Earlier this week Honda launched a new U.S. advertising campaign pleading that owners get their recalls air bags replaced.

Dealers are being told to replace all driver front air bag inflators found in recalled Honda vehicles, free of charge to owners.

Ten different automakers have called back 17 million cars and trucks in the U.S. alone because of the air bag problem, and 22 million have been affected around the globe.

At least 70 different lawsuits have been filed so far over air bag malfunctions across the nation, according to the Associated Press.

On Feb. 20, NHTSA started fining Takata $14,000 per day for failing to cooperate fully in their investigation into faulty air bag inflators. As of Thursday, the fines have grown to $393,000.
