Is General Motors going to unveil a rebooted Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid at the New York auto show?

Our bet: yes.

The hybrid model will supplement the redesigned 2016 Malibu sedan, which will also make its official debut at the New York auto show.

The last time that a Malibu officially carried the "Hybrid" appellation was in 2009, just ahead of the departure of the related Saturn Aura Green Line. (An eAssist model followed in subsequent generations.) That Malibu Hybrid achieved an EPA rating of 34 city mpg and 26 highway mpg—seemingly low returns by today's 40-mpg benchmark for non-hybrid models like those from Hyundai, Ford, Mazda, and Volkswagen.

A revitalized Malibu Hybrid would go up against the hybridized versions of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata, to name a few. As it stands, the Malibu is offered with a 2.0-liter turbo and a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines.

The new Malibu is set to be shown for the first time in about two weeks' time, and we'll have the first photos and specs for you then.
