The 20th annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance was held this weekend on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Isla, Florida.
Legendary F1 driver Sir Stirling Moss, the honorary chairman for the big weekend, kicked off the show by driving his 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR onto the field to the delight of show goers.
Moss didn't just come with the 1955 Mille Miglia-winning car however. The show also featured the "Race Cars of Stirling Moss" collection, which included legendary vehicles like his Mercedes-Benz W196, Maserati 300S, Aston Martin DBR1, Porsche RS-60 and a Ferrari 250 GTO, among others.
"To have Sir Stirling and his Mercedes-Benz racers from the 1955 double world championship season on the field is a fantasy come true for us," said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in a company statement. "This is absolutely unprecedented. Mercedes-Benz Classic, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum and Sir Stirling have given us all a moment unequalled in motorsport history."
Other collections celebrated at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance were the "Cars of the Cowboys," "Corvette Race Cars from 1968 to '72," "Forgotten Fiberglass" and "East versus West."
In total 325 vehicles were on display for nearly 30,000 attendees to check out during the busy weekend, according to the Amelia Concours Facebook. Luckily 500 volunteers were on hand to help during all of the concours' weekend events.
Some awards were also handed out this weekend as well. A 1930 Cord L29 Brooks Stevens Speedster, owned by Ed Schoenthaler, took "Best of Show Concours d'Elegance" while a Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spider, owned by David Sydorick, won "Best in Show Concours de Sport."
Seminars on "The Car Guys of Television," and "Design DNA of Iconic Cars," RM Sotheby's auction of classic cars and Mercedes-Benz Gala Dinner Honoring Moss were among the highlights of the weekend in Florida.
Since its introduction 20 years ago, the Concours d'Elegance has raised more than $2.5 million for Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and other charities, according to the Amelia Concours website.
If you missed the 2015 show, don't worry. The 2016 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance has already been scheduled for March 11-13, 2016.
