One of 23 original 1963 Volkswagen Beetle "Herbie" movie cars sold last week for $32,100 on eBay.
This Beetle was the 16th built overall and the second for the 1980 "Disney movie "Herbie Goes Bananas," that starred Charles Martin Smith and Cloris Leachman.
Unfortunately the other Herbie was destroyed, so the one sold at auction on March 5 is a pretty rare collector's item. The eBay listing was smart to note that the vehicle doesn't float like Herbie did in the film, but he was completely rebuilt to be used on the road.
The previous owner wasn't able to salvage the original floorpan due to damage from filming. It has since been replaced, along with new brakes, trans mounts and a "properly" shifting transmission.
"Herbie #16 was in very bad shape when he was located in a wrecking yard and had to have several of his body parts replaced also, his hood, rear fenders both doors and rear engine cover were replaced due to damage, one original rear fender even has a bullet hole through it," the seller said on eBay.
Herbie's glove box was signed by stars from the film, including Dean Jones and Joaquin Garay.
The Beetle was discovered in a wrecking yard in California after being auctioned off once filming was completed in 1980.
The car comes with a full binder worth of the cars history, the bill of sale and some photos that haven't been seen by the public before including shots of the vehicle underwater.
The seller confirmed that the car comes with a brand spanking new engine and some of the original body parts and Disney pieces like a remote control that lets his horn honk and a windshield squirter that sprays people as they're walking past the car.
"I do have all of the screen used body parts that go with the sale of the car, they are darn cool as they still have traces of the original stripes and you can make out where the "53's" were on the doors and foam still stuck to these parts that helped him float in the movie, also the original grey screen used sunroof cover still has a lot of the stripes on it."
