Recall Alert: Hyundai Calls Back 24,000 Genesis Sedans

Hyundai is calling back 24,400 Genesis luxury vehicles in North America in order to fix a water leak that can cause the transmission gear shifter to malfunction.

The automaker said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a weak seal is to blame for the water intrusion in the taillight assembly of the 2015 Genesis.

Vehicles being recalled were manufactured between Feb. 21, 2014 and Jan. 24, 2015, according to the filing.

"Water may leak into the rear combination lamp assemblies and cause an incorrect gear display on the instrument panel or a delay in the engagement of the selected gear when the vehicle is shifted from Park to Reverse or Drive," said NHTSA in its filing.

So far Hyundai hasn't receive any reports of accidents, but the filing did mention the automaker only found out about the issue after receiving a couple of warranty claims related to the problem.

Hyundai said if the wrong gear is displayed there is a good chance the vehicle will move in the wrong direction, thus increasing the chance of a crash.

The South Korea automaker is telling all dealers to apply pads in order to prevent water intrusion into the combination lamp housing. All repairs will be made free of charge.

Hyundai hasn't released an official notification schedule yet, but owners will be notified sometime next month, according to the Associated Press.

Owners with more questions can contact Hyundai's customer service line at 1-855-671-3059. The recall number is 128. For additional information, call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
