Goodyear is hoping to release a tire that could ease your mind when it comes to electric-car-range on the road.
Two concept tires were unveiled by Goodyear Tire last week that could change the role car tires play sometime in the near future.
Though the tires are just concepts right now, they do provide a glimpse into futuristic technologies that could eventually be released.
The first one unveiled is called the "BHO3," which offers occupants the chance to charge the batteries of electric cars just by transforming the heat generated by the rolling tire into electrical energy, according to Goodyear.
"This tire generates electricity through the action of materials in the tire that capture and transform the energy created by heat when it flexes as it rolls during normal driving conditions, "Goodyear said in a company release.
The tire was also created with ultra-black textured patches to absorb heat and light. Sunlight warms the BH03 on a parked electric vehicle, adding to the heat that can be transformed into electric energy.
The second tire, called the "Triple Tube," contains three tubes capable of adjusting inflation pressure to respond to specific road conditions.
"These concept tires reimagine the role that tires may play in the future," said Joe Zekoski, Goodyear's senior vice president and chief technical officer in a company release. "We envision a future in which our products become more integrated with the vehicle and the consumer, more environmentally friendly and more versatile."
Zekoski added that the concept tires instill a "forward-looking, market-back mindset" in Goodyear's research and development teams.
Right now we have no idea when the tires will be released or if the concepts will even hit production. If they do reach production it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see green vehicle sales go up and crashes go down.
In 2014, Goodyear made headlines for a SUV concept tire with two rings, each with its own air chambers. The outer ring was designed for on-road use and the inner-ring is for off-road adventures.
Goodyear currently employs 67,000 people at 50 facilities in 22 countries around the globe.
