Imagine waking up from a bad crash and you have no memory of the past 20 years of your life. All the important events and memories just taken away in an instant.

That's exactly what happened to Formula One driver Fernando Alonso who woke up from a pre-season testing crash believing it was the year 1995.

"I'm Fernando, I drive go-karts and I want to be a Formula One driver," the 33-year-old two-time Formula One champion said to doctors after waking up, according to The Telegraph.

The McLaren driver was transferred to a hospital in Barcelona after crashing into a wall during the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on Feb. 22. He was briefly "unconscious when rescue crews reached him" and was in a "confused state" when he woke up, according to the BBC.

Alonso, 33, has since been released from the hospital after spending three days under doctor supervision. Doctors said he suffered from retrograde amnesia post-crash, which isn't uncommon for someone who suffered from a concussion, according to McLaren Chairman Ron Dennis, who spoke at a news conference on Thursday.

Alonso, who was driving at a speed of 133 mph when he lost control of his car, released a video on YouTube to assure people that he is fine.

McLaren seems to think Alonso will be ready to compete in the second race of the season in Malaysia but he will miss the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Alonso confirmed the news on his Twitter account.

"All we can say is that he is making good progress, and that we hope and expect he will soon be back to his brilliant best," said a McLaren spokesperson to The Telegraph. "We understand the media's thirst for further information, but, as I say, the remaining unanswered questions will be answered by doctors, not by Formula One personnel."
