Google Debuts Auto Insurance Comparison Site For California

It's official: Google has introduced a car insurance comparison site in California and more states are expected to follow.

"Google Compare" is a comparison shopping website that allows people to compare rates from different insurance carriers.

No matter if you're a big time insurance provider or a local one, people looking for car insurance will be able to find you with an "apples-to-apples comparison" of similar providers, according to a company blog post.

"You can highlight what makes your business unique, whether that's an "A" rating in customer service or better discounts for safe drivers," Google said in its post. "And when users adjust their deductible or add additional cars to their quote, you can show updated pricing that matches their needs. They can then buy their policy online or over the phone through one of your agents."

The Mountain View-based company currently offers a service in the UK for users to compare more than 125 auto insurance options. The company takes a cut once a user purchases insurance either online or over the phone.

Recently, Google has started adventuring past its home turf of advertising and internet search to extend its dominance to fields like self-driving vehicles and different kinds of robotics.

It also runs a credit card comparison service in the U.S. under the same "Google Compare" name.

A number of big U.S. insurance carriers are reluctant to work with the tech giant however. Currently Google doesn't list major carriers like Allstate, GEICO and Progressive among its partners.

It's current partners include MetLife, Mercury Insurance, The General Insurance and Kemper Specialty.

Google is licensed to sell auto insurance in 26 states, according to Reuters. A Google employee is also licensed to sell insurance on behalf of CoverHound, a San Francisco-based company that pulls insurance options from the biggest carries available.
