Get ready New York, the new Chevy Malibu is coming.

We've confirmed that the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will make its formal debut next month at the New York International Auto Show.

GM says the next-gen model is based on a completely new architecture, meaning the Malibu's wheelbase is about 4-inchs longer than the current model. This will result in more interior space and legroom throughout the vehicle.

"The roofline has been stretched rearward giving a more sleek profile, while the front wheels have moved forward and front and rear overhangs have been reduced," said Ed Welburn, GM's vice president of global design, said in a company statement. "Along with the sculpted body side, these cues help Malibu appear more dynamic and sophisticated."

Thanks to a higher-strength steel structure, the new vehicle should be around 300 pounds lighter than its predecessor. This should mean improved fuel economy and handling, though we don't have official specs yet.

"Some tech features will be highlighted before the show, whereas others will be communicated at the show, on April 1," said Chevrolet publicist Chad Lyons to AutoWorldNews.

GM also confirmed that interested customers can expect the sedan to reach showrooms by the end of the 2015 in the U.S.

Additional details regarding the 2016 Malibu will be revealed each week leading up to its global debut in April at the New York Auto Show. It should be a fun month.

In February, sales of the Chevrolet Malibu in the U.S. dropped 20 percent to just 13,971. A newer option could help improve those numbers a bit, depending on what GM has in store for the 2016 model.
