GM Recalls Vans and SUVs for Steering and Fuel Problems

General Motors and Porsche AG have issued new recalls for steering and fuel leak issues after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) made an announcement. Sources say that the issue was released because vehicles were facing steering gear pitman shaft may fracture.

In a document filed with the NHTSA by the GM reads that it is recalling 6,159 heavy-duty 2012 models which include Chevrolet Express vans, Suburban GMc Savana vans and Yukol XL. The reason for recalling the vehicles states that the steering gear might not have been correctly hardened in them. If the steer gear breaks, it could lead the driver to lose control of the steering, which could cause an accident. GM says that it has no reports of crashes so far. The recall will begin from April 4.

The technical snag was discovered by GM’s supplier Nexteer while testing of steering gear units. Component testing results suggests that a failure due to this condition would not occur for at least five months in service for the most severe usage.

Recently, Porsche Cars in North America said it is also recalling 1,232 models of 2012 Carrera S two-door coupes for potential fuel leaks which could lead to a fire.
