Daimler Plans to Present Electric Car for China

German carmaker Daimler has announced plans to produce an electric car designed especially to meet the wishes of customer in China from 2013.

Daimler, mostly known for producing luxury brand Mercedes-Benz, will make a presentation on the electric car project at the Beijing Auto Show in April this year. It was also quoted that the German carmaker will produce the model with car and battery maker BYD Co. and it will have its own brand name.

“Right now it is frozen. And the first prototype will appear in April,” announces Dieter Zetsche, Daimler Chief. He was reported in the media that Daimler has earlier intentions to build an Electric Vehicles with a joint venture partner BAIC was scrapped as “they have no battery technology, so it was better to do this with BYD.”

It was also reported, the German company that engineers Mercedes and Maybach will also do the lion’s share of development on the BYD car. They will be contributing their information to the ambitious automaker that’s been plagued with issues including allegations of patent violations. Another key motivator to begin the project with has been previously reported, is domestically produced electric vehicles are eligible for substantial government incentives. The Daimler/BYD electric vehicle buyer will be able to qualify for $9,200 from the Chinese government and five Chinese cities are ready to offer an additional $9,200.

Zetsche confirms that the Daimler has long-term plans and it is reported that it is going to the trouble of building cars in China for future aspirations.
