Recall Alert: Jaguar Land Rover Calls Back Nearly 62,000 Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover North America is recalling nearly 62,000 vehicles after discovering some passenger-side air bags don't open on impact over faulty software.

The automaker will call back approximately 61,793 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models manufactured from 2012 to 2015, according to a statement posted on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website.

Dealers are being told to update the software free of charge.

"Every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the customer during the short time required for the work to be carried out," Stuart Schorr, a company spokesman, said in an e-mailed statement to Bloomberg.

Jaguar Land Rover said to federal safety regulators that it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries linked to the issue as of press time.

The company started looking into the issue last fall after customers said a light indicating the passenger air bag was off stayed illuminated in some cases when a light weight adult sat in the seat.

All owners will be sent alerts regarding the recall, which is set to begin on April 17.

Owners with more questions can contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837.

Land Rover's number for this recall is P059, according to the letter to NHTSA on Feb. 20. This is the second recall filed by Jaguar Land Rover this month.

The auto industry has been hampered by air bag problems since last year. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. called back 2.1 million vehicles in January alone over air bags that could go off while driving.

Some of those vehicles were called back again after last year's 10-auto maker recall of Takata Corp. air bags. Defects to Takata air bags have been linked to five U.S. fatalities and recalls of more than 20 million vehicles.
