Porsche can now update select sports car models that date as far back as the 1960s with a new purpose-built navigation radio system.
Calling the device a response to "growing demand," the automaker has unveiled a 3.5-inch touchscreen that fits into the DIN-1 slot in many classic sports cars. It has Bluetooth capability and can connect to various music devices.
The navigation radio, which was exclusively developed for Porsche Classic, was designed in black with "authentically styled" knob options to let it blend into a classic Porsche dashboard.
It is available for "sports car generations between the first 911 from the 1960s and the last of the 911 series with air cooling from the mid-1990s (993 series), including the earlier front-engine and mid-engine models," according to the automaker.
Porsche tested the innovation at the Technical University in Munich and also tried out the navigation system throughout Europe in each country where it will be available.
Available from partners in Porsche's service network, the navigation radio costs 1,184 euros, or around $1,341, in Germany. The device is still in the final testing stages in the United States, where pricing for the update has not yet been announced.
