Report: 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet Captured in Spy Shots

Mercedes-Benz appears to be very close to a production version of the new 2017 S-Class Cabriolet, according to spy shots published by Car and Driver.

Snapped with barely any camouflage, the purported Cabriolet looks like much more than a prototype, hinting that the coupe could be unveiled this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show and available in American dealerships as soon as early 2016, Car and Driver reported.

The coupe, which is underpinned by the C217's front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform, reflects the intensive expansion that Mercedes-Benz is giving the S-Class lineup with models like the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman and S-Class sedan.

The soft-topped convertible is expected to be large, measuring around 16.5 feet long and probably weighing close to 5,000 pounds.

In the base trim, the Cabriolet will be powered by the S550 coupe's 449-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8 engine and be equipped with all-wheel drive.

The next powertrain option will be the S63 AMG, combining a 577-horsepower twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine with all-wheel drive, while an S65 AMG could be available for the top of the range, offering a 621-horsepower twin-turbocharged 6-liter V-12.

Car and Driver estimates the base price at around $130,000 before the plethora of options that will definitely be available for the coupe.
