NASCAR drivers Danica Patrick and Denny Hamlin were involved in a wreck during Daytona 500 practice on Wednesday.

Patrick's No. 10 Chevy sustained enough damage to force the driver to switch to a backup car. She will now have to start at the back of the field in the second of the Budweiser Duel qualifying races on Thursday since she's using a backup car, according to the Associated Press.

Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota was repairable in time for Wednesday's second practice session.

The Sprint Cup drivers started a pileup after making contact while coming out of the second turn. Jeb Burton, Casey Mears and Michael Annett were also involved in the incident.

After the practice, Patrick called the wreck "the nature of pack racing" while Hamlin said "you always have to give a little bit extra room in practice."

Hamlin seemed to take some of the blame, but he said he wasn't completely sure what happened.

"I guess I'll take the blame, but I was going through the middle and in practice you can't make those aggressive moves, you want to protect your car," Hamlin said, according to the AP report. "I went through the middle and it was really wide but it closed as soon as I got beside her, the lane closed and it knocked me into the 13 (Casey Mears) and we had some attrition after that.

Patrick said she was disappointed to go to her backup car, but that it's a gamble all NASCAR drivers face.

"I know that it was a good car and it's never a good thing to crash," she said, according to the Associated Press. "Sometimes there's not much you can do about it. I could have collected more people and it wouldn't have been anything that they were a part of. But that's just group racing at Daytona. That's the gamble that we all face."

Annett and Burton also had to go to backup cars.
