Ford got some good news this week as the redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang coupe earned the top five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The rating doesn't apply for the 2015 Ford Mustang convertible however as it hasn't been rated yet.

Here's how the Ford Mustang faired during its crash tests: five stars in the rollover, front and side crash tests. Doesn't get much better than that.

"The new Mustang was built from the ground up," said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer, in a company statement. "It is more refined, more powerful and it has everything people have come to love about Mustang for the past 50 years."

It's not surprising Ford's latest Mustang performed so well with all the standard safety equipment it comes with like eight air bags, including a new glove box-mounted knee air bag for the front-seat passenger and a driver's knee air bag.

The NHTSA must have been impressed with the 2015 Mustang's other standard safety features like a rearview camera, traction control, stability control and antilock brakes. It also comes with semi-autonomous technologies like Adaptive Cruise Control, SYNC 911 Assist, which lets a mobile phone connect to SYNC to call 911 directly when needed.

The new Mustang is the first car to offer four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines that produces at least 300 horsepower.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2015 Mustang.

Interested customers around the U.S. can buy the 2015 Ford Mustang coupe at their local dealer now.

The 2015 Ford Mustang competes for sales against similar models like the Nissan 370Z, Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro.

In comparison, the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro and 2015 Dodge Challenger also earned the top five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. 

The 2015 Nissan 370Z hasn't been rated yet by NHTSA.
