NHL Star Alexander Ovechkin to Donate New Honda Accord For Charity

Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin will hand over a new 2015 Honda Accord to assist the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA) and its programs in the Washington, D.C.

Honda, the sponsor for both the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition and 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game, will present Ovechkin with a new Accord today at 12:30 p.m. at Bill Page Honda in Falls Church, VA. He will then turn the car over to ASHA following the presentation, according to the automaker.

The automaker decided to give Ovi a new Accord after learning that his publicized pleased for the car during the All-Star Weekend were on behalf of the charities he supports around the D.C. area.

Ovechkin announced his plans to donate the car to ASHA during All-Star weekend, which took place Jan. 24-25 in Columbus, Ohio, after being inspired by his relationship with 10-year-old Washington Ice Dogs player Ann Schaab.

Following the Capitals' Oct. 5 preseason game, Ovechkin met Schaab during a special session with 60 players from ASHA and granted her request for a sushi date.

The organization, which was created in 2000 for players with developmental disabilities, offers people of all ages the chance to learn and grow by playing hockey. Currently, more than 50 ASHA programs are held in 30 cities throughout the U.S.

Ovechkin created Ovi's Crazy 8s in 2006, a program through which he purchases and donates Capitals season tickets to "Most Valuable Kids," allowing fans who normally wouldn't have access to tickets to watch the Capitals play live.

Ovechkin also supports organizations working with children to grant wishes. He recently granted a wish of an eight-year-old Norwalk, Connecticut native Lauren Santora on Dec. 12-13.
