Fiat Chrysler has issued a recall for 2014-'15 Jeep Grand Cherokees to mend a software issue that causes air bags to deploy when they're not needed.

Affecting around 230,000 vehicles worldwide, the recall includes around 170,000 Cherokees in the United States, about 20,000 in Canada, 4,000 in Mexico and 36,400 in other markets, CNNMoney reported.

The software in question is intended to detect when the vehicle is about to roll over; off-roading drivers who engage in "extreme driving maneuvers" have caused their Cherokees to lean to the side enough to result in deploying air bags.

"These maneuvers dramatically changed the vehicles' angle of operation, relative to the ground," the automaker described. In some cases, the air bags can deploy even if a crash is not actually imminent.

Fiat Chrysler is notifying affected owners of the recall, which will involve dealers upgrading the software in their Jeep Grand Cherokees. Meantime, consumers can contact customer service at 1-800-854-1403.

In a separate campaign announced on Saturday, a 928,000-vehicle recall has affected 2002-'03 Jeep Libertys, 2002-'04 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Vipers worldwide that also have air bags that can unexpectedly deploy.

That recall, which is for an electronic defect unrelated to the Cherokee software issue, is part of a larger safety campaign where several automakers are recalling 2.3 million vehicles for air bag issues.
