Rumors suggest that BMW is giving up on diesel models for its popular 3 Series and replace by the company’s new ActiveHybrid technology, according to Bimmerboost.

“One of the few diesel options we actually had in the USA from BMW is now being taken away from us. Why? BMW wants us to buy their upcoming hybrid 3 series instead... So, the 335d is axed in favor of a hybrid,” Bimmerboost posted.

Although BMW told Autoblog.com that the ActiveHybrid 3 Series is not a replacement for diesel models, the company does not plan to release a new 335d during 2012.

When asked a turbo 2.0-liter diesel was an option, BMW’s product communication manager Tom Plucinsky, while sill claiming that it is possible, replied, “The F30 328i has the same EPA rating as the 335d. We need to up our game if we're going to continue to offer a 3 Series diesel in the U.S.”

A 2011 BMW 335d model has a fuel efficiency of 23/36 miles per gallon, producing 265 horsepower. A 2011 328i has an EPA rating of 24/36 mpg and produces 240 horsepower.
