Tesla's Model S P85D beat the big, bad Dodge Challenger Hellcat in a recent run on the track, setting a world record for electric vehicles at the same time.

The dual-motor Model S P85D hits 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and produces a combined 691 horsepower, while the Hellcat runs on a Hemi V-8 engine generating 707 horsepower. In the clip recorded by StreetCarDrags.com, one clearly came out on top.

Tesla's high-powered offering set a world record by running an 11.6-second quarter-mile at 114.6 mph, making it the fastest production electric car in the world. The Challenger Hellcat's run was 17.46 seconds at a mere 82.74 mph.

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk believes that electric cars are the future, and beating America's biggest-horsepower vehicle on a drag strip can only further establish the innovative Model S as a contender.

"Electric cars are just fundamentally better," Musk said during a speech at this year's Automotive News World Congress. "I think that's where the future is going to go, but it's only going to go there if the big car companies make risky decisions to do electric vehicles. I hope they do, and we're trying to be as helpful as we can be."
