Five people were killed and dozens were injured during crashes on icy roads this weekend in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, authorities have confirmed.

Icy road conditions also caused major accidents and road closures in Maryland and New Jersey, according to Reuters. The weather was so bad in the U.S. Northeast that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority had to temporarily suspended bus services in New York's Bronx borough.

Light rain in Philadelphia caused flash-freezing on roads and crashes on I-76 and other local highways, said Eugene Blaum, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in a press statement. At least 60 vehicles were involved in a major crash in the westbound lanes of I-76, causing one death so far, a state patrol lieutenant confirmed to the media on Sunday.

An 88-year-old woman was killed after losing control of her vehicle in New Haven, Connecticut, city officials confirmed in a statement to Reuters.

Pennsylvania State police confirmed that two people were killed in a crash heading west on a frozen highway in Delaware County just west of Philly.

A 34-year-old man was killed on I84 in northeastern Pennsylvania after his car overturned. The man and his 12-year-old son, who is in critical condition were thrown from the vehicle during the incident, he Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement to Reuters.

Nearly 140 accidents were reported as of early Monday in the city due to slippery roads.

Ice forced a closure of select parts of I-95 and other key roads in Philadelphia despite the fact that the transportation department deployed 150 salt trucks. Conditions were better later on in the day and all routes were open as of press time.

Black ice on roads before daybreak caused the most difficult driving conditions this weekend, according to Blaum, who spoke with Reuters.
