This is the 2016 Volvo XC90 R-Design, which made its North American debut at the Detroit auto show. Based on the upcoming, redone XC90 sport-utility vehicle, the R-Design package extends its stylish design cues for an interior and exterior that are attractive in addition to being functional.
The XC90 R-Design is a sporty-looking version of Volvo's totally revamped three-row crossover that's due to go on sale later this year. If you're interested in making your XC90 R-Design really look the part, the optional air suspension lets you ride low. At launch, the only engine will be Volvo's T6 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder with about 300 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic. Later, the T8 plug-in hybrid good for about 400 horsepower will be offered.
While we've seen the new XC90 before, this is the first time we're seeing the R-Design up close. Standard 20-inch wheels almost look small, compared to the show car's 22-inchers. There's also more blacked-out trim, deeper front spoiler and satin silver mirror caps. The blue matte-like paint on the show car, an R-Design color, also cuts a striking image. Inside, wood gives way to carbon fiber as the dominant trim element, and there's also contrast stitching on the black sport seats and dash.
Thor. As in the optional headlights with LED running lights meant to resemble Thor's Hammer, according to Volvo. They look particularly mean on the R-Design variant, though.
Yes, this summer or fall. Prices are set to start around $54,000 for the R-Design, but the XC90 T6 starts off at $48,000.
