2016 Nissan Titan Debuts: 2015 Detroit Auto Show

The 2016 Nissan Titan XD, the company's second attempt at making a full-size pickup truck and now armed with a turbodiesel engine.

What is it?

Nissan may be taking another stab at the full-size leaders like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500, but it's admitting to a much narrow niche than before. The 2016 Titan XD is pitched at a tougher crowd than rivals, with Nissan saying it bridges the gap between light duty and heavy duty trucks. Three cab styles, two frame sizes and "several" bed lengths will be available, showing Nissan has learned this time that they have to give buyers choice—even if the company isn't gunning for Ford's sales volume.

What's new?

A veritable truckload, for the first time in 12 years. The interior is much nicer than before, although anyone who's been in a Nissan product from the last few years will feel instantly at home. A new Platinum Reserve top-trim goes after super-lux pickups like the Chevrolet Silverado High Country, but even mainstream SL models have nice-enough materials inside.

Most fascinating feature?

That much-discussed Cummins turbodiesel V8, which is sure to appeal to some Ram customers who aren't a fan of that truck's new V6 EcoDiesel. Nissan says with its 5.0-liter, 310 horsepower and 555 lb.-ft. of torque, the turbodiesel is good for more than 12,000 lbs. of towing. V6 and V8 gas engines will also be on offer.

Can I buy it?

Yes, this fall. Expect it to start higher than the current truck's, but no word on what kind of premium the Titan's exclusive diesel will cost.
