Car Rumors: Is This the Mid-Engined Chevrolet Corvette of Your Dreams?

Long desired by car fans, the elusive mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette may finally be on the table.

Car and Driver has snapped a black test car that is reportedly an engineering mule of the long-looked-for mid-engined Corvette.

No news is good news, so at least General Motors hasn't countered predictions from Car and Driver about the upcoming C8.

"The new Corvette will be the mid-engined American Dream Machine that Chevy couldn't, until now, muster the courage to build," Car and Driver projected in a visionary forecast.

The C8 Zora is reportedly in the works to hit dealerships in 20 months or so as a 2017 model.

A mid-engined Corvette is a build long desired by Chevy fans who crave the body layout that makes for a well-balanced sports car.

Estimating that the car in the photos has 19-inch wheels, Car and Driver scales the test vehicle's wheelbase to 98.9 inches, which would be about 8 inches shorter than the current Corvette and put the transmission behind the rear axle instead of before it.

With a more succinct wheelbase, the Corvette will have more responsive steering and a tighter turning circle.

The C7 Corvette can't really take on any more power unless the engine is moved. Plus, updating the Corvette could help it appeal to a younger set of buyers, so let's hope this phantom C8 turns out to be the real deal.
