BMW's Sales Last Year Passed a Record 2.1 Million

BMW Group's vehicle sales for 2014 increased 8 percent for 2.11 million units, boosted by rising demand in China.

BMW, Rolls-Royce and Mini saw a 17 percent jump in demand in the world's biggest auto market, along with a 5 percent rise in the United States and a 6 percent increase in Europe, Reuters reported.

"Our new models such as the BMW X4 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer demonstrate our ability to develop new vehicles which attract new customers to the brand," Ian Robertson, the BMW board member who oversees sales and marketing, said in a statement. "The popularity of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 shows our game-changing 'born electric' strategy is on track. We are now looking forward to building on these successes in 2015."

In December, which is one of the biggest months of the year for auto sales, registrations for BMW Group vehicles increased 15 percent for 215,217 units.

The BMW 3 Series lineup posted a 2 percent increase in sales to reach 476,792 vehicles for the year, while BMW 5 Series models sold 373,053 units in 2014, reflecting a 1.7 percent rise in sales. The BMW X5 luxury midsize sport utility vehicle sold 147,381, an increase of 37.4 percent from 107,231 deliveries in 2013.

The automaker finished out 2014 with 2,117,965 vehicles sold altogether, a record for BMW Group, said a company press release.

The BMW brand had its best year of all time, with sales rising 9.5 percent year over year for 1,811,719 vehicles sold in 2014. Mini essentially stayed flat, posting a less than 1 percent drop in sales for 2014 related to its transition to a next-generation core model, while Rolls-Royce reported a fifth consecutive year of growth and a record 4,063 units sold.
