Weeks after the announcement of the 2016 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell prototype, it seems that Lexus may too have plans for a hydrogen-powered sedan—although of completely different origins.

We hear from Motoring.com.au that Toyota's luxury arm is also looking for an alternative fuel sedan, but will neither develop its own platform for the vehicle nor borrow from the Mirai. Instead, that model would be based on the existing LS luxury sedan (pictured above) but use a retrofitted hydrogen fuel cell system from the Mirai. Still following?

The hydrogen-powered LS is expected to weigh less than a petrol-powered one, but at least over two tons, so it will require a healthy amount of power to get it moving and keep up momentum. Two tanks of hydrogen fuel are expected to fit under the skin of the reimagined LS sedan.

Adding hydrogen-powered vehicles is part of Toyota's larger plan to sell 50,000 plug-in hybrids by 2020. If given the green light, the hydrogen-powered Lexus would supplement some sub-1000 anticipated units of the Mirai in its first year of production.
