After more than 40 years in New Jersey, Mercedes-Benz is considering moving its headquarters to North Carolina or Georgia.

The news was first reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. A move would put an end to the company's 42-year-old ties with Montvale, N.J., where Mercedes-Benz occupies about 141,000 square feet of office space and employs more than 500 people.

The automaker is also looking into "several" cities in North Carolina, two sources told The Wall-Street Journal.

"Unfortunately everything that's out there is speculative and none of it's coming from us," said Donna Boland, manager of corporate communications for Mercedes-Benz when we asked about the possible move.

Mercedes Benz is already looking over multiple tax incentive packages. New Jersey would likely extend a package in order to retain the automaker, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported. 

A move would mark the third relocation by a major automaker in North America. Toyota Motors is moving all of its North American marketing, sales and other corporate operations from southern California and Cincinnati area to Dallas.

General Motors' Cadillac brand will be moving from Detroit to New York, according to Reuters. The office will have about 120 employees, mainly new, by next 2015.

Commercial real-estate firm JLL Inc., who assisted the Toyota move, is also helping Mercedes-Benz, the Journal reported, citing sources "familiar with the matter."

NorthJersey.com reported that Mercedes was considering Savannah, G.A., Jacksonville, F.L., and Atlanta as potential relocation sites.

Atlanta would be 200 miles from Vance, Ala., where the automaker has manufactured light vehicles since the 1990s.
