Federal regulators have given the 2015 BMW X5 high marks for safety after three crash tests.

Rating the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the sport utility vehicle, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the BMW X5 five stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test, Edmunds.com reported.

The SUV received an overall safety rating of five stars despite losing one star in the rollover crash test.

The X5, which competes with the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Porsche Cayenne, hadn't gone through federal crash testing since 2011, according to HighGearMedia. The crash tests were updated that year to include more rigorous safety testing.

"Because of the more stringent tests, 2011-newer model ratings are not comparable to 1990-2010 vehicles," the NHTSA said on its website.

In the standard trim, the X5 comes with "antilock brakes, brake assist, electronic stability control and traction control," according to Edmunds.

For an additional $1,900, buyers can add the Driver Assist Plus package to include features such as blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning and other advanced safety systems.

The 2015 X5 has not yet been rated for safety by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
