Here it is: the first look at the 2016 Audi Q7, the SUV that will bring Audi into the next decade. Earlier images came to us via leaked sources, but the announcement is official now.

If the photos are indeed legitimate, and not computer-generated, then we have a lot to be excited about when the next-generation model lands. The Q7's shape is more blocky overall, losing some of the current model's rounded edges, but that's no bad thing: The kinks in the polygonal grille are going to be a defining feature of future Audis, according to the designers behind the Audi Prologue concept. Inside, these leaked images show a cabin more in line with the 2015 TT and TTS than the current model's, building on the clever digital dashboard theme that allows for customization.

We know that the Q7 will be built on the modular MLB platform that also underpins the aluminum-heavy A8 sedan, and that should translate to a lighter overall weight. With the look of a tall wagon and the presumed driving dynamics upon which Audi has built a reputation—great steering and brakes, adjustable chassis, and carlike moves—the Q7 is an intriguing departure from the current model. A 333-hp six-cylinder engine will be among the first powertrain choices, and a plug-in hybrid is expected to follow.
