Instagram Passes Twitter With 300 Million Users

Instagram has passed more than 300 million users, sharing over 70 million videos and photos a day.

The four-year-old service is now more popular than Twitter, which has 284 million active users, according to its website.

"We're thrilled to watch this community thrive and witness the amazing connections people make over shared passions and journeys," Instagram said in a company blog post. "As Instagram gets bigger, we're focused on helping you discover photos and videos from people who you care about, whether it's a friend or your favorite musician."

Facebook's photo-sharing service crossed 200 million users back in March.

Instagram was purchased by Facebook back in April 2012. The site said in its blog post that users ill now see a "verified" logo for athletes, celebrities and brands as Instagram attempted to deactivate spam accounts.

"Today, we're excited to announce verified badges for celebrities, athletes and brands, making it easier for you to connect with the authentic accounts you're looking for," said the blog post. "These badges will start rolling out over the coming days."

The site is popular among automakers like Mercedes-Benz, Tesla Motors, Chevrolet, and Ford.

Mercedes-Benz has 1.5 million follows and 3,475 posts, as of press time. Tesla Motors has 93.7k followers and 285 posts, Ford has 283,000 followers and 533 posts and Chevy has more than 205,000 followers and 775 posts.

Instagram also announced on Wednesday that it will permanently delete all spam accounts. This could drop some user's follower counts.

"We've been deactivating spammy accounts from Instagram on an ongoing basis to improve your experience," the company said in its post. "As part of this effort, we will be deleting these accounts forever, so they will no longer be included in follower counts. This means that some of you will see a change in your follower count."

Last month, Instagram launched improvements to its search option and a People tab on its Explore page, which highlights accounts users should follow.
