Mercedes Sets Ambitious Sales Target, Announces AMG Sport Lineup

Mercedes-Benz is aiming to double sales for AMG vehicles in a three-year push that will include launching less expensive models.

"True sport-car technology will be more accessible and will therefore appeal to an even broader range of customers," said AMG Chief Executive Tobias Moers, as quoted by Bloomberg News.

Daimler AG is targeting sales of 64,400 vehicles by 2017, double the 32,200 in sales from last year.

AMG plans to debut the first two AMG Sport models in January at the Detroit Motor Show. The first AMG Sport titles will be built on "the C-Class sedan and coupe variant of the GLE sport utility vehicle."

Competing with BMW and Audi, AMG hit an earlier sales target four years ahead of schedule when its lineup expanded with new offerings such as the CLA45 AMG sedan.

"We are proud of these successes, as they provide the basis for the next stage of our growth strategy, which we are now launching," Moers said in a statement. "In the next three years we aim to more than double our total sales for 2013."

The new AMG Sport models will cover the space in between the AMG Sports package for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the classic AMG models, according to the automaker. AMG plans to add more models after the first two offerings debut in January.

The carmaker expects the new Sport lineup to constitute around 40 percent of its sales eventually.
