Lyft Wants To Pay You To Carpool

Lyft is offering a way to let drivers make some cash on their morning commutes to work with a program called Driver Destination.

Launching in beta testing versions for San Francisco and Los Angeles, Driver Destination connects people who commute in the same direction and builds on Lyft's carpooling service from earlier this year, Mashable reported.

The company calculates that around 80 percent of commuters drive alone to work and estimates that drivers could earn as much as hundreds of dollars per month through the new program.

Driver Destination is geared toward drivers; people can become Lyft drivers by going through a process that includes a background check, DMV check and vehicle inspection. Prospective drivers are also required to ride with a Lyft safety inspector before being cleared.

The carpooling program follows Lyft Line's advent in August. Lyft Line connects passengers who are heading in the same direction, giving them a rate 20 percent to 60 percent cheaper and essentially letting them split a cab. The service has also been called Lyft's challenge to public transportation.

Uber has a carpool option as well, offering a discount to two riders who are willing to share a vehicle.

Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft have been seen as a threat to the taxicab industry as well as a way to have fewer cars on the road, thereby reducing carbon emissions.
