Eager to be a first mover in the miniature crossover segment, Honda introduced the 2016 HR-V five-door sport-utility vehicle today in Los Angeles. It doesn't do donuts, but it sure looks sweet. 

What is it?

Call it a more tailored Fit. The HR-V is taller, and its occupants sit higher, than the Fit, but it fits comfortably in that hatchback's shadow. Honda likes to consider the HR-V an SUV that fits within its quiver that includes the Pilot and Ridgeline, although it's essentially a taller hatchback.

What's new or changed?

The HR-V is a brand-new model in a growing segment. Unlike the Fit, the HR-V uses the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine from the larger Civic-much the same strategy as the CR-V implements. The HR-V retains the Fit's innovative Magic Seat and center-mounted fuel tank for maximum versatility. We're curious to see just how many boxes of donuts will fit behind the rear seat.

Can I buy it?

Honda expects to begin delivering the Fit-based HR-V to dealerships in the United States in early 2015. No word on pricing yet, but a safe bet is that the HR-V will cost somewhere between the Fit and CR-V.
