2014 Los Angeles Auto Show: 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT S Bows

Not content with introducing one model at the Los Angeles auto show, Mercedes-Benz decided to unveil a coterie of high-performance vehicles—and perhaps none is more impressive than the Mercedes-AMG GT S.

What is it?

It has the shape of a Porsche 911 and boasts a twin-turbocharged V-8 heart, but the Mercedes-AMG GT S is a beast in and of itself. The GT S may lack the gullwing doors and "wow" factor of the SLS AMG—the outgoing Mercedes-Benz performance champ—but its new styling is derived from some very muscular concepts.

What's new or changed?

The Mercedes-AMG GT S is all-new for 2015. It's part of a two-model lineup that will eventually include a 456-horsepower GT, but the first version to come to the U.S. is the 503-hp GT S. The rear-wheel-drive fastback GT S sends that power to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. According to those close to Mercedes-AMG, the GT S was not intended to outdo the SLS AMG in terms of sheer horsepower and speed, and they say the package is nearly perfect.

Can I buy it?

The Mercedes-AMG GT S is expected to land in showrooms by spring of 2015. Interested? Bring a cashier's check for approximately $150,000.
