Volkswagen is calling back 442,000 Jettas and Beetles to repair an issue that could cause rear suspension failure if the vehicles aren't fixed properly after a crash.

The recall affects 2011 through 2013 model year Jettas and 2013 through 2013 model year Beetles, according to the Associated Press.

If rear trailing arms are damaged during a crash and not fixed properly, they can fracture "suddenly," VW said in documents posted by U.S. safety regulators on Wednesday.

 The issue could cause loss of control and increase the chance of a crash. Trailing arms connect the axle to the frame.

VW says there have been no crashes or injuries reported in the U.S., but there were reports of fractured trailing arms in Asian countries, according to the AP report.

Dealers are being instructed by the automaker to install sheet metal at no cost to customers. Customers will have to pay for repairs if their suspension was damaged however, the automaker said.

Parts needed to make the necessary repairs are currently not available. VW is notifying customers to take their cars to dealers for a free inspection to see if their vehicle needs to have repair work done or not.

Earlier this week, the automaker recalled more than 580,000 cars in China for potential axle problems.

In October, VW announced that it was recalling 270,635 Audi cars in China due to an air bag software issue. The recall coincided with a lawsuit against Takata Corp, a Japanese supplier whose potentially defective air bags have led to the recall of millions of vehicles around the world.
