Mini Cooper Recall: Hardtop Called Back To Fix Spare Wheel

BMW of North America is recalling its 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop two-door cars over an issue with the spare wheel tire that could separate from the vehicle.

At least 5,805 vehicles are affected by the recall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The spare wheel may have been attached under the car with a nut that is not self-locking," said NHTSA in its summary of the issue, confirmed on Tuesday.

"Vibrations from driving may cause the nut to loosen, allowing the wheel to separate from the car. If the spare wheel separates from the vehicle, it could become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash," the agency added.

The company said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to this issue yet, according to a press statement released by Mini spokeswoman Nathalie Bauters.

Affected BMW vehicles were manufactured from January 7, 2014 to July 21, 2014, according to the automaker.

The redesigned 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop is sold for $20,745, including a $795 shipping fee. The base Cooper can go 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, and 7.3 seconds with the automatic.

It has a top speed of 130 mph, according to BMW.

Mini dealers are being instructed to replace the spare wheel securing nut with a self-locking nut. All repairs, if necessary, will be made free of charge.

The recall is set to begin sometime in late November.
