2014 Los Angeles Auto Show: BMW X5 M and X6 M

BMW will have its next generation of M-tuned SUV vehicles on hand at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week, the X5 M and X6 M.

What are they?

These two vehicles are designed to surprise you. Sure they may seem better suited to lug people and cargo around but they can also hold their own on a race track. The X5 M and X6 M are capable of 155 miles per hour, despite the fact that both vehicles weigh more than two and half tons.

They also feature enhanced suspension, steering and braking systems to handle daily commutes and abuse on the track.

What's new or changed?

Both the X5 M and X6 M feature lower styled designs that remain true to their less powerful predecessors and big 21-inch alloy wheels.

The duo has 3 percent more power, thanks to a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with cross-bank exhaust manifolds and direct injection. The 4.4-liter unit is capable of producing 567 hp, 53 lb.-ft. of torque and the ability to reach 60 mph in just 4 seconds.

The transmission has been revamped, with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic replacing the X5/6 M's six-speed.

BMW has fitted the two vehicles with a double-wishbone front suspension, auto-leveling rear air suspension, 21-inch allow wheels and massive Micheline tires.

The X5 M features a more squared off appearance in the back, whereas the X6 M has a more coupe-style roofline.

Can I buy it?

Not yet, but they won't come cheap. The 2015 BMW X5 M and X6 M will reach dealerships in spring 2015 for $99,650 and $103,050, respectively, including a $950 destination and handling fee.

Auto World News is in Los Angeles covering the auto show. Check back throughout the week for updates on the latest debuts and concept cars.
