With the launch of the 2-series Coupe for 2014, BMW proved that its sporty miscreant could be cleaned up into a more polished and refined compact without losing its character. Based on first impressions, the same can be said about the upcoming 2-series convertible. The fabric roof remains mostly untouched, and the car's exterior received a tasteful nip and tuck including a more swept back grille and headlights; getting rid of the outgoing model's slightly more pronounced front end.

What is it?

BMW will be launching the 228i and M235i convertibles simultaneously as well as an all-wheel drive 228i xDrive in early 2015. Both 228i variants will be equipped with BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 240 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque, propelling the compact ragtop to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Surprisingly the 2-series will also benefit from a launch control function for those 0-to-60 sprints, which seems an unusual offering.

What's new or changed?

Looking at the M235i, BMW's turbocharged 6-cylinder known as the N55 is once again back in action, and as with the M235i it remains tuned at 320 horsepower and 330lb-ft of torque. This variant will continue to be offered with a short-throw manual gearbox option, as well as offer performance-tuned suspension, variable sport steering, and larger fixed-caliper front brakes (4-piston fronts and 2-piston rears).  

Can I buy it?

U.S. pricing has been set at $38,850 for the 228i, $40,650 for the 228i xDrive, and $48,650 for the M235i including $950 in destination and handling, but don't be surprised to add a solid chunk more in options for a reasonably equipped car.
