Daimler is unveiling the rejuvenated Maybach brand as Mercedes-Maybach at this week's Los Angeles Auto Show. The sub-brand's first model will be called Mercedes-Maybach S600 and will be heavily based on the existing S-Class sedan.
What is it?
The newly dubbed luxury brand is launching with a new version of the S600 sedan, adding a top trim level equipped with a V-12 engine. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sedan will feature a 6-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 engine that can generate 530 horsepower, and it should go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
What is changed?
Formerly a struggling one-model brand, Maybach has been brought back to life after Mercedes-Benz closed its production in 2012 due to disappointing sales. Under its new name and direction, Mercedes-Maybach will become a full lineup of vehicles as opposed to offering just one model. The brand is aiming to become even more luxurious to entice big-spending customers.
The new sedan will have a stretched S-Class body with new treatments that include refreshed glasswork and Mercedes-Maybach badges.
Can I buy it?
The luxury S-Class limousine will start at around $250,000, which is about $31,000 more than the current S600, according to Car Magazine.
Mercedes-Maybach will be looking to compete with models such as the Bentley Flying Spur and the Rolls-Royce Ghost when the S600 arrives by the second quarter of 2015.
