Federal regulators have opened a probe to examine around 374,000 Honda Accord vehicles from the 2013 model year that consumers say can have steering failure.

Four accidents have reportedly been a result of the issue, which involves either a sudden loss of power steering or unexpected difficulty in steering, according to USA TODAY. All of the accidents happened at speeds of less than 30 mph.

"Just over half of the (complaints) indicated observing a power steering warning message as the failure occurred," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement. "Some reported that the condition was corrected by turning the vehicle off and restarting. However, several indicate the condition returned again after restart."

The NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation of the issue after identifying 24 complaints, each with a unique vehicle identification number, alleging that an Accord vehicle had power steering problems.

Some customers said that turning off and restarting the car seemed to fix the problem, while others said the issue was reoccurring even after the vehicle was restarted.

"Honda has recently learned that the NHTSA has initiated a preliminary evaluation regarding the potential for the loss of electric power steering in 2013 model year Honda Accord vehicles," Honda spokesman Chris Martin wrote in response to an Edmunds query. "Honda will cooperate with the NHTSA through the investigation process, and we will continue our own internal review of the available information."
