Porsche Expects Macan SUV to Help Sales Reach 200,000

Porsche has forecast that it will easily hit its 200,000 overall sales goal next year, which would be an increase from 162,000 in 2013, thanks to the new Macan compact SUV released last April.

Porsche is determined to lower carbon dioxide emissions across its fleet and has raised its spending on hybrid models, which combine an electric motor and combustion engine.

The brand new plug-in hybrid version of its popular Cayenne SUV was introduced last month during the Paris Auto Show. Porsche expects the new Cayenne to represent about 10 percent of the model's overall sales eventually, or the same as the Panamera plug-in hybrid, Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier said to Reuters on Monday.

"Interest (in hybridization) is growing steadily," the executive added, saying that the next generation of Porsche's iconic 911 sports car could be offered as a plug-in hybrid as well.

Despite its goal, production of the 918 Spyder, which debuted during the 2013 Frankfurt auto show, has been limited to 918 cars to make purchasing one seem more exclusive.

Volkswagen's drive to fund its global expansion plans and overtake sales from Toyota, the automaker's main rival, involves relying on profits from Porsche.

Operating profit at Porsche dropped 12 percent in the third quarter to 529 million euros ($658 million), mainly because of the amount the automaker spent on expanding its German plants in Leipzig and Zuffenhausen, and spending on fuel-efficient technology, according to Reuters.

"We are close to the finish line" in selling all 918 of the 918 Spyder Hybrid model , Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier told Reuters on Monday, adding that there has been a strong demand for the vehicle from North American drivers.

The 918, which starts at 768,026 euros, comes with a standard 4.6-liter, V8, 887-hp, hybrid engine that achieves 20-mpg in the city and 24-mpg on the highway, according to the automaker's website.

On Monday, Porsche reported that October deliveries jumped 18 percent to 15,820 vehicles, lifting 10-month sales by 14 percent to approximately 151,462 vehicles, according to Reuters.
