It's no secret that Brazil, Russia, India, and China are intent on rapidly putting their respective populations on wheels—and that sometimes means skipping over decades of innovations and modernization in engineering for the sake of quick production.

That strategy may succeed in countries that are still evolving from two wheels and animal-drawn carriages to motor vehicles, but it's a much tougher sell to Europe and other countries in the developed world.

Case in point: The Datsun Go and Maruti Swift, two hatchbacks developed by leading global automakers to sell at a low, low price point. While these cars share roots with Nissan and Suzuki products, respectively, they aren't quite up to snuff when it comes to safety.
