General Motors stated this week that the company is planning on introducing over 500,000 vehicles by 2017 that will include some form of "electrification to focus on plug-in technology."

The company is currently on pace to sell over 50,000 electric cars this year thanks to vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt, and Buick LaCrosse.

"The plug-in offers a unique opportunity to change the way people commute," Mary Barra, senior vice president of Global Product Development told media attending the GM Electrification Experience in San Francisco. "Plug-based solutions will play a significant role in our technology portfolio going forward."

The plug-in Chevy Volt was introduced in 2010 and has made quite an impression on critics and car buyers alike since being released according to the company's press release.

The Volt includes a lithium-ion battery with rechargeable energy storage system and a Voltec electric drive system with 1.4L gasoline powered range according to the Chevy website. The four-wheel vehicle also comes with eight air bags, LED daytime running lamps and automatic climate control.

Standard features include a remote vehicle starter system, a 7-inch diagonal color Chevrolet MyLink touch screen system, and a three month trial subscription to SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The car has annually been one of the best selling cars since being introduced and the success the car has enjoyed has helped the company come up with more electric car designs.

"What started out as a technology proof point... has turned into a real-world starting point to push EV technology further and faster than we thought possible five years ago,"  Barra said. "The unique propulsion technology pioneered in the Volt - the same technology that will be featured in the Cadillac ELR - will be a core piece of our electrification strategy going forward."

In 2013, GM will introduce the Chevy Spark EV in South Korea and selected U.S. markets thanks to the success of the Chevy Volt. The vehicle will be showcased for the first time at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.

"What we think customers will enjoy most is how fun Spark EV is to drive; it's seamless and power is available at every stage of the drive," said Chuck Russell, Spark EV's Chief Engineer in a company press release. "This will help us to provide an exciting option for those customers who are looking for an EV that's as much fun to drive as it is environmentally responsible."
