Apple CEO Tim Cook announced late on Wednesday that the company donated more than $20 million to (PRODUCT) RED this quarter, mainly thanks to a World A Day campaign featuring an Apps for (RED) promotion and a direct cut of Apple Store purchases.
The Bono-backed RED foundation owes a lot to the iPhone maker, which conducted a number of fundraising projects in its commitment to aid the worldwide fight against HIV/AIDS, according to Re/code.
"I'm thrilled to announce that our total donation for this quarter will be more than $20 million, our biggest ever, bringing the total amount Apple has raised for (PRODUCT) RED to over $100 million," Cook said in an email to employees. "The money we've raised is saving lives and bringing hope to people in need. It's a cause we can all be proud to support."
In November, Apple unveiled a number of special promotions as part of its Dec. 1 World AIDS Day campaign, starting with the "Apps for (RED)" venture, which saw leading developers put content up for sale with proceeds going toward (RED)'s global fund.
Apple kicked off the sale with a (GarageBand)RED update for 99 cents.
Apple also gave a portion of online and retail Apple Store sales to the Global Fund to fight AIDS during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are considered to be two of the biggest shopping days of the year.
Apple gave out special (PRODUCT)RED iTunes Gift Cards with all select purchases, and each card represented an additional donation to the fund. A direct cut of Cyber Monday sales went to the fund as well.
On World AIDS Day, all Apple Stores tinted their Apple logos red to recognize the millions of people currently living with the virus and in remembrance of the 35 million who have died from AIDS.
